Visit From Friends

Our good friends, Jon and Paige, and their boys came up for a visit Sunday evening and stayed until Tuesday afternoon.  They were applying for a travel status at the airport that allows them to go through a shorter line in customs.  They are moving to China for 3 years for Paige's job.  Unfortunately, their appointment happened to be on a day we were getting a nasty winter storm.  The roads were very icy and slippery, and rattled their nerves while driving to and from the appointment, but they made it back in one piece and checked that off their list of things to do before they leave!  That day also happened to be my birthday.  So since Jon is a professional chef, I requested a variation to one of my favorite desserts, creme brulee, by including eggnog after Jon had mentioned that he'd made eggnog creme brulee recently.  It was very yummy!  The next day we did some shopping at the mall and went out to lunch at Portillo's, which recently opened a restaurant adjacent to the mall.  It was a very fun visit with them!

Jon taught us this alternative to torching the sugar on top of the creme brulee.  You caramelize the sugar in a pot on the stove and then spread it out on a cookie sheet to harden.  You break into small pieces, combine with some sugar, and sprinkle on top of the creme brulee.

It turns out looking like this.

We also used our torch to have an authentic creme brulee.

Brian added a birthday candle for me and they all sang.
