Trellises

When the amount of space you have to garden in begins to shrink, the only other way to grow things is up!  I had seen an idea in a book about creating an A-frame trellis to grow pumpkins on.  This would help to keep the vines off the ground and contained to one area.  I told Brian that this would be a great Mother's Day present idea for me.  When researching online for instructions on how to make it, he found a different idea that would take up much less room and allow us to grow watermelons, too (well, at least the small sugar baby ones)!  Brian bought the materials and set to work getting them built.  As with every first-time project, it took a little while to get them built.  You always run into a hiccup and have to think up or research a solution.  This trellis idea uses a metal electrical conduit, cut to the height and width you want, fit over rebar to hold it in place and keep it from blowing over, and strung with nylon string to support the heavy fruit.  He has completed 5 out of the 6 trellises and will finish the last one this coming weekend.  I really like how they turned out and can't wait to watch the plants grow on them!

The farthest one away is the Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin, the one in the middle is for the Sugar Baby watermelon, and the one closest is for the eating pumpkin.  The pumpkin trellises are 6' x 4' and the watermelon trellis is 5' x 4'.  No special reason why that one is shorter.

Standing next to the Jack-O-Lantern trellis looking the other way.  You can also see the pumpkin starts in the ground.

Brian works on stringing the Cucumber trellis.

Cucumber trellis complete!

The Sugar Snap peas start to grab ahold of the string.
