A couple Girl Scout updates...last week, Hailey and I volunteered with her Girl Scout troop at "Feed My Starving Children". Taken from their website, "Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit." When we arrived, we listened to a 10-15 minute orientation. After putting on hair nets and washing our hands, we moved into the packing area where we received instructions on how to pack the meals. The next hour and fifteen minutes were spent packing, and the last 15 minutes were spent cleaning up the packing area and praying over the food. Our "shift" of 100 people packed 89 boxes which equated to over 18,000 meals! I'd highly recommend it to anyone with a location in their state. It was a great experience! We're going back in another month with Hailey's 4-H group, and I'm hoping to do it again after that.
Last night, Hailey's troop went to tour a local fire department in order to earn their Safety Pin. She enjoyed it and was impressed with the kitchen there. "It was bigger than ours, Mom, and it had two refrigerators!" She also pointed out that one of the fireman's beds was not "made". :-)
Getting the vegetables ready.
First you started with a scoop of vitamins, then a scoop of vegetables, then a cup of soy, and ended with a cup of rice. Someone held the bag under the funnel until all ingredients were in and passed it off to another person to weigh and seal the bag.
The girls from her troop (plus two of their siblings) stand behind the packing table. 36 bags go into one box.
