Civil War Dress Exhibit

Catching up on some blogging from the past week.  We have been busy!  My friend, Stefanie, and I went to see an exhibit at our town's historic Meeting House called "Ladies Attire of the Civil War".  A woman who works for the historical society has a very large collection of dresses, hats, shoes, bonnets, hoops, petticoats, etc. that she displays once a year for the public to see.  I went to see her display (all different dresses) last year and loved it.  Stefanie likes dresses during this time period as well so we planned a time to go together this year.  It was just as fascinating as the last time!  I love that the owner walks around with you and explains each dress and what it was used for.  She also answers any questions you have...she's done her research!  And all that is required to see the exhibit is a small donation to the Meeting House.  How many times do you pay quite a bit of money to get into a museum to do a self-guided tour and leave with only a few facts?  This display and guided tour was worth every penny!

Almost all of these dresses came from the east coast, New England area, or England.  This is where most people could afford to purchase this type of material.

Very pretty colors and patterns.

Various bonnets/headpieces on display.

Everything was hand sewn back then.  Can you imagine how long it took to sew/embroider this on?

The overcoat on the right goes on over the dress to the left.  We were curious if the points at the bottom line up when the coat is on or if they fit in the open spaces.  The owner said she hadn't put them together yet but was going to before she puts them away.

Look at how tiny corsets made their waists!
