We used red for a schoolhouse, wooden floors, a black chalkboard, and an apple that would have been in their dinner pails. I embroidered Laura's name, letters, and numbers to represent writing on the chalkboard or her slate.

Little House on the Prairie Quilt: Block 9
The last block for On The Banks of Plum Creek represents Laura's and Mary's first time going to school. Ma dresses them in their Sunday dresses and ties ribbons in their hair. She also gives them school books that she had used when she was a young girl so that they can now study from them. Pa had to give them money (from the little that they had) to buy a slate and pencil so they could learn to write. This was also the first time that they meet the snooty Nellie Oleson!
