The last block for By the Shores of Silver Lake is a violet. This is to represent the large grouping of violets that were growing in an old buffalo wallow near the homestead. While the family was outside planting a couple trees, Grace had wandered off. They all frantically looked for her, afraid she had entered the Big Slough and could not be found. Laura eventually found her sitting among a large circle of violets in an old wallow picking them and smelling how sweet they were. Laura couldn't believe how perfectly circle the wallow was and how dense the violets were growing in it that she thought it might be a fairy garden. Pa and Ma told her that she was too old to be believing in fairies and that it was just an old buffalo wallow where the buffalo used to paw up the ground and "wallow" in the dust. We could imagine how wonderful the violets probably smelled! The material for the violet itself is from the Little House on the Prairie fabric line.
