Extended Family Visit in Indiana

We went to the Lafayette, Indiana area this past weekend to visit Brian's great aunt Phyllis.  She is Brian's mom, Margo's maternal aunt.  Margo's mother died in 1973 in a car accident at the young age of 48 so Brian never got to meet her.  Aunt Phyllis was the only representation of that family branch going forward.  Brian remembers lots of fun times spent at Aunt Phyllis (or Aunt Dee Dee as they called her) and Uncle Bobby's farm.  Bob & Phyllis grew popcorn on their farm, contracting with Orville Redenbacher for 25 years.  Phyllis will be turning 87 this year and the genealogist in me didn't want to wait any more years to get to meet her and learn about her parents and grandparents as well.  Margo's cousin's wife, Angie, helped arrange a get together at the nursing home where Aunt Phyllis lives.  Brian's parents joined us for the visit as well and we had a wonderful time talking about the old times.  I'm pretty sure Aunt Phyllis enjoyed it, too...she didn't want us to leave!  After the visit, we drove over to Buck Creek, Indiana to a cemetery where Brian's 3rd great grandparents are buried.  Then we drove on to Delphi to a couple cemeteries where Brian's great and 2nd great grandparents are buried.  We also got to see the house where his great grandparents lived in town and the church they attended.  We then drove to Brookston to see the farm where Bob & Phyllis lived.  It was a fun day!

We wanted to bring Aunt Phyllis some flowers to brighten up her room but didn't want to bring real ones that would die in a week.  We found an idea online for coffee filter flowers using diluted food coloring.

We thought they turned out so pretty!

I quilted a barn and silo pillow for her to remind her of their days of farming and growing popcorn.

I put a border around it...

and made the backing brown.  I liked how it turned out!

Cemetery in Buck Creek.

Loved this farm right next to the Buck Creek cemetery.  So pretty with the red barn against the green leaves of the trees and the corn growing in the field.

Visiting the Masonic cemetery in Delphi.  Clara thinks she and Grandma should search for the graves over that way.

The house where Brian's great grandparents lived in town.

The Baptist Church the family attended.  Aunt Phyllis played the piano for Sunday church services and Brian's mom remembers singing solos in the services when she and her parents would come to visit.  Lots of musical talent on that side of the family!

Uncle Bob and Aunt Phyllis' farm.

Lots of fun memories for Brian and his family there!

Indiana wheat field nearby.  So beautiful!!
