4-H: Hayride & Bonfire

Hailey's 4-H club has a hayride and bonfire every year in October.  We had an "Indian Summer" yesterday with the temperatures around 80 degrees.  It was super windy, but the evening temp only went down to 75, so it made for an enjoyable event!  The hayride took us over to a local farm field where two combines were harvesting some corn.  We then rode over to a local tree farm (family operated) where we learned about the various trees they grow, how they take care of and shape them, and how they use a big machine to dig them out of the ground to transplant.  It was very interesting!  We took the hayride back to the bonfire and roasted marshmallows for S'mores.  Then it was time to go home...too soon for the fun to be over!  I remember when I was younger going on a hayride and then back to a barn where we had to stick our hands in these boxes and guess what it was (i.e. spaghetti for brains, peeled grapes for eyeballs, and so on).  So much fun!

Clara, Hailey, and Laura enjoying the hayride.

Watching the combine harvest the corn.

Working our way through the corn field.

About to listen to the tree farm presentation.

The table behind him displayed samples of the 10 different types of trees he grows on the farm.  He grows mostly conifers and just started growing some deciduous.

Showing how the machine behind him digs up the tree and places it in the big basket covered with burlap.

Hailey enjoys a S'more.

Clara works on roasting a marshmallow while Brian talks to one of the other dads.

There was a large full moon out!

Full moon over a corn field near our neighborhood.  This was at a little after 8 pm.
