Little House on the Prairie Quilt: Block 4

Our second block from "Farmer Boy" is one that represents the food they grew, stored, sold, and ate.  We chose potatoes, carrots, and corn.  The chapter labeled "Springtime" in the book was devoted to the planting of these three vegetables, along with wheat, rye, and oats.  They talked about preparing the soil, spreading seeds evenly (which takes practice), and knowing how to tell the right time to plant each vegetable/grain.  Later in the book, they talk about harvesting and preserving all of these and other vegetables they grew in their garden.

I found a pattern called "Corn and Beans", which was created back in the early 1900's to represent a family's dependence on the crops they grew and preserved.  We found material for potatoes, carrots, corn, and wheat.  The wheat material is actually from the Little House on the Prairie fabric line by Andover Fabrics!

Helping Clara feed the material through the machine.

She's still too little to reach the foot pedal, so she gets help from me!

Hailey works on a block.  The majority of the piecing and sewing is done by me, but I want them to each sew a little of every block so that they know they helped to make it.

Finished block!
