Little House On The Prairie Quilt: Block 3

Block 3 is our first block from "Farmer Boy".  This book is all about Almanzo Wilder's (Laura Ingalls' husband) early life growing up in New York.  We chose to make the block be about one of the family's colts, Starlight, that Almanzo's father gifted to him at the very end of the book.  Throughout the book, Almanzo greatly wishes he was old enough to "break in" a colt like his father does.  His job was to break in their gentle oxen instead, but he couldn't wait until his father felt he was responsible enough to handle the more rambunctious colts.  You could feel how surprised and excited he was to finally get an opportunity!

We chose a Sawtooth Star pattern to represent the colt's name of Starlight and found material with pictures of colts on it to go in the middle of the star.  Appliqueing a horse would likely take quite a while!
