The first block for "The First Four Years" represents the checkered red and white tablecloth that Ma gave to Laura to use in her new home after marrying Almanzo. A piece of home to make her feel comfortable as this was the first time she was living on her own. Laura used it on her drop-leaf kitchen table. The block pattern is a 36 patch in order to make it look like the tablecloth. It's hard to see in the picture, but the white fabric has chickens on it to represent the chickens that Laura and Almanzo raised on their farm.
